Discuss Bullying with others. Start a Discussion. > No response from school

Hello my name is Kimberly. My son was recently spit on and attacked by a student that had been bullying him for weeks. As a result of my son trying to defend himself against a kid twice his size, my son is scheduled to receive In Schoool Suspension. I expressed my disapproval of ISS on every possible level but the school is standing by there decision. Prior to the attack, my son reported this student to one of the coaches and nothing was done. I brought this to the attention of the principal and I was told, " the story you relayed to me differed with his statements to me." I met with the Assistant District Superintendent and am now waiting to hear from the District Superintendent. I've been told several times by each entity how serious bullying is just for nothing to be done on my childs behalf. He and I have been told that he has to keep reporting it, just for nothing to be done!! One unsuccessful report is too many.

A blanket approach stating to all students that it is acceptable in schools to defend yourself will only exasperate the problem. Similarly, you cannot condone such action on an individual basis. Schools are often referred to as microcosms of the community.Fighting in the community resulting from someone defending themselves would result in appropriately similar disciplinary action. You simply do not respond to bullying by like behavior. Report the bully and follow established procedures.
